What Is Myotherapy?

Myotherapy is the evidence-based assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal pain and associated conditions.

Myotherapy treatments can not only assist in prevention, assessment, early intervention and treatment of injuries and pain, but can also manage ongoing chronic musculoskeletal conditions.

Although often confused with remedial massage therapy, Myotherapists, who actually study remedial massage first before taking the next step up to Myotherapy, also use, beside their hands, techniques such as trigger point therapy, joint mobilisation, dry needling, cupping, myofascial release, acoustic wave therapy (otherwise known as shock wave therapy), low level laser therapy (LLLT) stretching and exercise and rehabilitation programs as well as pain management.

Myotherapy can be used for a number of injuries or conditions that result from strains, sprains and occupational, postural and recreational stresses. Emotional stress, incorrect ergonomics, faulty biomechanics, muscular imbalances, traumatic or overuse injury or chronic neuromuscular or musculoskeletal illness or disease.

These underlying causes may have symptoms such as general aches and pains, headaches, neck or back pain, joint stiffness, neurological symptoms or reduced flexibility.

Myotherapy techniques help to reset the body, and are reinforced through the prescription of exercise and/or education about pain management, load management, activity modification and/or lifestyle modification.

A Myotherapist does not stop working with you once the pain eases, but will continue to work with you post treatment to restore optimal activity.

During your initial consultation he will request a brief medical history, presenting injury history. A full skeletal structure and posture assessment with range of movement testing, joint mobility, muscle strength and neurological testing as well as an orthopaedic test and palpatory assessment. Lifestyle factors and diet are also assessed.

Costs start at $66 for a short therapy session. Costs are charged according to time and complexity of the therapy which will be thoroughly explained during the initial consultation. The cost of initial consultation fee is $60.
