Aims

Labioplasty surgery aims to address excess skin of the “labia minora” (inner vaginal lips) to result in a neater appearance of the vagina.

The excess skin may result from inadequate skin of the “labia majora” (outer vaginal lips) or follow pregnancy. The labia majora or labia minora reduction surgery can be corrective to address unsightliness, skin irritation, infections and difficulties with hygiene.

In an initial consultation at our clinic, we’ll ascertain patient expectations, identify issues of concern in regards to appearance, self-esteem and intimacy, and look at any limitations of lifestyle such as horse and bicycle riding in addition to problems with recurrent infections and skin irritation. During the consultation, your surgeon will identify potential limitations to achieving those expectations including the extent of labia minora skin excess and adequacy of the labia majora skin. Your surgeon will discuss these issues with you during your consultation for labiaplasty in Melbourne.

Labioplasty Surgery

The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic administered by Specialist Anaesthetists in an accredited hospital. The incisions are placed such that they are concealed by the inner aspect of the labia majora. The surgeon will discuss the extent and length of the incisions (and therefore scars) prior to surgery and advise you of the labia minora tissue which will be removed.

The wounds are repaired with dissolving stitches and at the completion of surgery, a urinary catheter is inserted temporarily to minimise the risk of urinary retention.

Protective pads are worn for approximately five days after the labia reduction surgery. Preventative medication will be recommended to you to minimise the risk of vaginal thrush which can develop after the routine use of antibiotic therapy and can affect wound healing after labioplasty surgery.
